Busy Buffet

We have lots to tell you!

First of all, there’s the latest radio show, which inevitably contains a bit of Prince, but TBH there’s something in there for everyone as we veer from rock to electronica to grime to disco Beatles. Described as “Top quality light entertainment” by Phil Cope, which puts us up there with Eurovision, right?

Then there’s Front Room Disco at Kirkgate Centre on Saturday 21st May, hosted by us! Yes, Wil Oddsox has entrusted us with his baby, the daft bugger. Expect disco chaos. We haven’t had a good dance in ages, we’ll be like crazy monkeys let out of the cage.

Finally, we’re also hosting Record Club on Saturday 28th May, also at Kirkgate Centre. The event is 33 1/3 Revolutions, so rock up with your political music and social commentary on vinyl. Wonder how many versions of Two Tribes you all have?

Hope to see you at one or all of the above!

A Bumper Buffet New Year Special (#57)

Happy New Year!

The Head Honchos at BCB entrusted us with the task of seeing in the New Year, and somehow we managed not to break anything (although Betty Bird did inadvertently knock the needle from Emma Bob 3’s Nadine Shah record when playing with her Hello Kitty Christmas gifts). We played a lot of good music between 11pm and 1pm and you can pretend it’s midnight all over again by listening to part one and part two via BCB’s nifty podcast thingy. (A parental advisory warning – there are a few sweary bits post midnight). And we did the typical end of year round up thingy by chucking in a few 2013 favourites as well as tips for 2014.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who sent in requests and suggestions!

This is what we played:

1. Prince – 1999
2. David Bowie – Boys Keep Swinging
3. Future of the Left – Johnny Borrell Afterlife
4. Cowtown – Ghost Wave
5. Foals – Impaler
6. Courtney Barnett – Lance Jnr
7. Nadine Shah – Dreary Town
8. Daft Punk – Get Lucky
9. Jeffery Lewis and the Rain – WWPRD
10. Tera Melos – Weird Circles
11. Marnie Stern – Year of the Glad
12. Stereolab – French Disko
13. Beastie Boys – Sabotage
14. Electric 6 – Gay Bar
15. Shirley Bassey – Spinning Wheel
16. Queen – Don’t Stop Me Now
17. McClusky – Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues
18. Fuck Buttons – Year of the Dog
19. Olivia Newton John & ELO – Xanadu
20. Hot Chip – Ready for the Floor
21. Notsensibles – I’m in Love With Margaret Thatcher
22. Los Nortes Americanos – Something
23. Suuns – 2020

Buffet on Fantasy Festivals (show #51)

Now then!

Last week we broadcast a Fantasy Festival special, cos it’s quite fitting at this time of year. Some people are off to Latitude tomorrow (including Jenny Jet), and I am very jealous indeed (although you would have to pay me a lot of money to endure Texas).

Anyroad, you can probably guess that our show explored who would be in our fantasy line-ups. Certainly no re-formed bands, we’ve gone for people in their prime! Thank you to everyone who sent their own suggestions, including Jenny Wilson, Cheryl Killey, Anke Holgersson and Nanette Brimble. Elvis, George Formby, Kirsty MaColl… all good suggestions, and eclectic, which is how we like it.

Here’s the small selection we squeezed into the show:

1. ELLA FITZGERALD – Can’t Buy Me Love
2. SONIC YOUTH – Sugar Cane
3. VIOLENT FEMMES – Prove My Love
4. AC/DC – Back in Black
5. PUSSY RIOT – Putin Lights the Fires
6. GLEN CAMPBELL – Wichita Lineman
7. PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION – Life Can Be So Nice
8. SUPER FURRY ANIMALS – The International Language of Screaming
9. DESTINY’S CHILD – Bootylicious
10. COCTEAU TWINS – Bluebell Knoll
11. DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 – Going Steady
12. KRAFTWERK – Tour De France
13. THE SMITHS – William, It Was Really Nothing
14. THE TEMPTATIONS – Ball of Confusion

And there’s a bit of Mike Sammes Singers and Herb Alpert in there somewhere.

If you listened/listen to the show, you’ll know I laboured over my line-up, and even now keep thinking of bands I missed, but here’s what I came up with (in order of appearance):

Friday

Dirty Projectors
Duchess Says
Violent Femmes
The Knife
Husker Du
Pixies
Super Furry Animals
LCD Soundsystem
Sufjan Stevens

Saturday

Death From Above 1979

Ella Fitzgerald
The Kinks
Hern Alpert and the Tijuana Brass

Feel free to add you own line-ups, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
