Celebrating the female of the species…Wed 9th March

Hello!

Really loved doing the show this week – chatting to BCB’s finest female DJs and playing some of their favourite songstresses. We celebrated International Women’s Day on The BCB Sessions – only broadcasting the voices of the fairer sex. It’s almost impossible condensing everything I’d like to play into an hour but here’s what made the mix:

Broadcast – Still Feels Like Tears
Gossip – Listen Up (live in Liverpool version)
Garbage – Only Happy When It Rains (Selected by Alissa Juvan, one half of BCB’s Fabric show)
Lush – Single Girl (back to 1996….)
Kaito – Should I (Chosen by Katie Jennings, one half of BCB’s DIY or Die show)
Anna Calvi – Blackout (atmospheric, immense…brilliant)
Blue Roses – Does Anyone Love Me (Acoustic BCB Session – shiny and gorgeous!)
Roisin Murphy – Ruby Blue (Selected by Sally Cooper, blogger, presenter/producer of many a BCB show)
Bat For Lashes – Horse and I (another one of mine…takes me right back to sitting on the carpet at the Brudenell Social Club being mesmerised along with many other people by N Khan in tight white jeans).
Nina Simone – Feeling Good (Chosen by Emma Adams, one half of BCB’s Buffet duo..we’re feeling good)
Peaches – Downtown (it was either this or suck on my ***** !@%&)
MIA – It Takes A Muscle (Had to play MIA…she’s ace)

Of course I’ve missed out loads of great female artists so I’d like to do it all over again with the women I missed  – who should be in the mix next time? Suggestions please….Joan as Policewoman, Cat Power?? Your thoughts please. You don’t have to be a lady to contribute. Thank the lord.

If you missed the show you can listen again….hopefully this link will take you to it

Eclectic Mainline – 2nd June 2010

The Love Apple, Bradford. RIP

The Love Apple, Bradford. RIP

Admittedly the closure of The Love Apple in Bradford isn’t the saddest news I’ve been greated with in the past couple of days. I wish it was, however, and that the shootings in Cumbria hadn’t happened.  However, I’m totally shocked and gutted that The Love Apple had to close, and this is a sad result of what has happened to Bradford in the past few years.  About 5 years ago the place (both Bradford and The Love Apple) was buzzing (quite literally after The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit‘s loud gig there!)  and there was a real vibe around the place.  Now…well, how things have changed.  The Bradford Playhouse is showing promising signs, but if a nice independent bar like The Love Apple can’t make ends meet, well, we’ve got problems.  Other highlights that I’ve seen there include Jeffrey Lewis (at which I was very proud to be part of the support with Wilful Missing), Dufus and The Wave Pictures (a great, yet poorly attended gig, again at which Wilful Missing were lucky enough to be asked to support).  I was also at the Jeremy Warmsley gig at which one Laura Groves made her first appearance, many a moon before blossoming into Blue Roses.  So, thanks must go to Pav and co for giving us The Love Apple, and I wish him and his staff the best of luck for whatever they do next.

Here’s what I played in my show tonight:

Too Much Too Young 30th December 2009

So… the noughties are almost over. Time for a review show!

Tonight we paid homage to some of the best artists of the year with songs from the likes of The Wave Pictures, Julian Casablancas and Blue Roses.  We also played one of the My Latest Novel tunes form their 2009 BCB session.  Plus KC’s films of the year and of the decade (number 1 was My Sassy Girl).

We also looked a bit further back and played a track from one of the classic albums of the past decade (A Postcard to Nina from Jens Lekman’s “Night Falls Over Kortedala”) and played an even older song (Why Bother? by Weezer) which sort of looks to the future as there is a Weezer tribute act called Stinkerton playing at the 1 in 12 club on new years eve. Though there is competition for NYE party of the year as at the playhouse there is also a “Decade Dance” event which looks ace. And there’s loads of great stuff happening in Bradford in the near future.

Bring on the tenties!

TMTY 04.11.09!

We’ve been forced today away from our usual live broadcast due to rehearsal commitments for this weekend’s Raise Your Banners festival of political song, a worthy excuse if ever there was one.  So this show was a pre-record.

Yessir. A trip down on Saturday night may well result in you seeing my goodself in some fetching women’s clothing…!

But yes, this week we played some very nice stuff indeed.

WILD BEASTS – The Fun Powder Plot

Here’s the Kendal / Leeds gang’s fantastic Jool’s performance for those that missed it too-

Then we talked about how Laura Groves AKA Blue Roses still owes us all a pound in royalties for singing on her album (along with a few other BCB Broadcasters I believe, Albert?)
We played an old version of-
BLUE ROSES – COAST
and chatted about her imminent headline tour:

checkit.

Then a glorious short from-
THE BOBBY MCGEES – L.O.V.E / A Masonic Youth

New music then from the glorious Yeasayer.
‘Ambling Alp’ is their new single.
Available for free here – http://www.amblingalp.com/
Properly stunning stuff, we’re really glad to have some new music coming from those guys after overplaying ‘All Hours Cymbals’ the last few… well… years! (it came out in 2007!)

KC’s Backrow banter gave a solid 8/10 to thirst.

On at the pictureville now!

And a solid dressing down to the latest Danny Dyer / Tamer Hassan / FIDDY Cent shocker ‘Dead Man Running’, 2/10.

We finished with DEVENDRA BARNHART – Baby
Happy Days.
Happy Bonfires.
