For your pleasure #1: Roxy Music

Every now and again it occurs to me that a band or artist I love and cannot help but immerse myself in on a regular basis are not necessarily known by everyone else in anything other than name.

One such occurrence took place when I attempted to delve into a fawning discussion about the works of Roxy Music, and found that such an endeavour was fruitless, as I was the only person there au fait with their oeuvre.

And so, thunks I, why not spazz my adulatory musings on such matters onto the blog and start a series of You Should Like This, Actually postings which will hopefully enrich yours lives and mark me out as a veritable paragon of taste into the bargain.

And so, where better to start with the series than with the band which, in a strange roundabout sort of way, spawned the monster; Roxy Music.

Phwoar, you would.

Phwoar, you would.

Formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry, the general perception of the band by Joe Public seems to be overwhelmingly weighted towards their latter work and much of Ferry’s solo career wherein he crafted the image and sound of something of a lounge lizard.  It was the 1980s, y’know.

Speech Debelle & The Mercury Music Prize

I had intended to knock something up about the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize before I went on holiday, and therefore also before this year’s winner was announced.

You only have my word for it, therefore, that Speech Debelle was my tip for the prize. In fact, I think I have now correctly guessed the Mercury Prize winner for the past four years. Sadly, I’ve never even set foot inside a bookmaker’s, so my Nostradamusesque capabilities in this matter have sadly not led to a bulging wallet.

It’s a strange old beast, the Mercury. When Antony & The Johnsons won the prize in 2005 for the modern masterpiece I Am A Bird Now, the eponymous lead singer Antony Hegarty claimed that the award was “kind of like a crazy contest between an orange and a spaceship and a potted plant and a spoon – which one do you like better?” I suspect it this nonsensical eclecticism which determines that I should always be quite so interested in the result. Neil Hannon interview (I don’t like cricket, I love it)

Arhh haha, It’s not really Patrick here at all, it’s Adam. But I am posting on behaf of the blue haired chap from the picture on the left (he has gone to France). I am posting up his interview with Neil Hannon best know for The Divine Comedy (and My Lovely Horse). The interview was broardcast on Patrick’s Monday night show, where he spoke mainly on the subject of ‘The Duckworth Lewis Method.  If you have not heard the album you can listen to the whole thing on spotify here (I just listened to the whole thing 3 times over; it’s very good on the ears).  Anyhow enough of this written primative word;  click play to hear the interview…

Bingley Music Live

I have to confess it gives me an extra thrill to stand and watch Bingley Music Live every year. I spent the first 18 years of my life living in and around Bingley and so to come back and stand in Myrtle Park and watch the event grow into a what is becoming a full blown music festival is very exciting, and a little bit surreal.
