Eclectic Mainline 2nd January 2013

For the same reason that last week’s show was not a special festive edition, this week’s is not a special new year show.  Would you rather I had varied things a bit?  Let me know if so, either in the comments here, or on Twitter.  I just want to get as much new music into my show each week as I possibly can.  I do have one or two ideas for special features, which I might introduce over the next few weeks, but otherwise I will just stick to my “here are some new releases I think you should hear” formula.

If you’ve been listening to this show for a few years, you’ll know I’m a big fan of Max Richter.  Here’s a new tune of his, composed for for Random International’s ‘Rain Room’ at the Barbican Centre, down in that London:

Caitlin Rose, who has a cross-generational appeal in our has, is back too, and here’s her new single:

If you are brave enough to listen back to the whole show, be my guest. These are the tunes I played:

PAWS – “Miss American Bookworm” (LP “Cokefloat!”)
Jamie Lidell – “What A Shame” (single and LP – “Jamie Lidell”) (Warp)
Tame Impala – “Mind Mischief” (single and LP – “Lonerism”)

Concrete Knives – “Wallpaper” (single b/w “Greyhound Racing”) (Bella Union)
Mazes – “Bodies”
Euros Childs – “Be Be High” (single) (National Elf)
Yo La Tengo – “Well You Better” (single)
Sum Of R – “Growing Into Something Special” (LP – “Ride Out The Waves”) (Storm As He Walks)

Eclectic Mainline 26th December 2012

No Boxing Day special show for me this year.  This wasn’t for any “bah humbug” reasons, but simply because I still have a backlog of new music that I want to air.  I know that if you want Christmas music, you are clever enough to find ways of hearing it all by yourself.  I don’t mean that you’re too dim-witted to unearth the tunes in my show, I mean….oh, I could get myself into a hole here.  I’ll quit while I’m only marginally behind and just show you what I played…

There is a new single coming out early in the new year by Roots Manuva.  This is certainly cause for excitement.

Roots Manuva – Natural Featuring Kope (Clean Edit) by Big Dada Sound

This Hauschka tune has been on my ‘to play’ list for several weeks now, and it is shameful that it has taken me so long, as it’s rather good indeed:

Joshua James – “Willamette” (LP – “From The Top Of The Willamette Mountain”) (Free The Sun)

The Creole Choir Of Cuba – “Llegada” (LP – “Santiman”) (Real World)
Concrete Knives – “Greyhound Racing” (single) (Bella Union)

Eclectic Mainline 12th December 2012

I’m starting to feel a little Christmassy now.  As is Neil McSweeney.  He has recorded a couple of festive covers with David J Roch, including this lovely version of John Prine’s Christmas In Prison:

Away from the Christmas theme, here’s a gorgeous piece I played tonight by Billow Observatory:

Eclectic Mainline 28th November 2012

An excellent Roll The Dice / Pole remix 12″ came out last week. I played “The Skull Is Built Into The Version” tonight, and here is another track from it:

I also played one of the queerest cover versions I’ve ever heard.  I have Phil Cope to thank for this, seeing as he brought it to my attention when he played it in his show last week.   See what you think of this:

Eclectic Mainline 21st November 2012

Do our brains act like virtual jukeboxes, storing a copy of every song we have ever enjoyed, and calling up any given song when prompted to do so by an outside stimulus? I ask this because every once in a while a song will end up going round in my head simply because somebody has said something that brings to mind its lyrics, or a conversation reminds me of a specific event that my brain links to a given piece of music.

This happened to me last week. I was speaking to a good friend about some of our favourite music from 20 years ago.  The next day when I awoke, ‘Fishes Eyes‘ by New Fast Automatic Daffodils was in my head, and there it stayed for several hours.  Despite not having heard it for several years, my brain was giving a pretty faithful rendition, and it sounded very much like this:

How this happens, I would love to know.  If anybody wants to sponsor me to write a book on the topic, I would certainly take up the challenge.

Anyway, as a result I decided to play a bit of New FADS in tonight’s show.  I also played this excellent Four Tet and Burial collaboration, that I picked on on 12″ at Jumbo Records earlier this year:

Another tune I played tonight was this from the Snow Palms album:

If you have a desire to listen back to the full show, you will find it on the BCB Listen Again site.  These are the tunes I played: Continue reading

Eclectic Mainline 7th November 2012

There were a couple of tunes tonight that I had to cut short due to their length.  My heart told me to let them play out, but my head told me it would have been at the expense of other tunes getting a look in at all. But such is the wonder of the Internet, that you can hear one if the long-uns in full now.  This is by Fimber Bravo, the first steel pan player to feature in my show:

Fimber Bravo – Life After Doomsday (with Zongamin) by moshi moshi music

Alas I couldn’t find the Nick Edwards tune online, so you’ll have to take my word for how good the full 16 minutes of that one is.  I can, however, show you this delightful tune by Akira Kosemura, the title track from the It’s On Everything album which is being re-issued by Raster Noton:

If you wish to listen back to the full show, you’ll find it here.

Here is a full list of the tunes I played:
The Magnetic North – “Bay Of Skaill”
Grischa Lichtenberger – “1110_01_Iv_1b” ” (LP – “And IV Inertia”) (Raster Noton)
Errors – “Relics”
Pollens – “Helping Hand” (single and LP – “Brighten & Break”) (Tapete)
Merz – “Eudaimonia” (LP – “No Compass Will Find Home”)
Akira Kosemura – “It’s On Everything” (LP - “It’s On Everything”) (Someone Good)
Fimber Bravo – “Life After Doomsday (with Zongamin)” (Moshi Moshi)
