When Big Joan Sets Up

Assassins 88

Assassins 88

Hello all,

When Big Joan Sets Up is BCB’s dirty little secret tucked away on Wednesday nights at midnight like a mad relative trapped in the attic in a 1970’s horror film.  If you, humble blog reader, decide to join the happy band of insomniacs, skiving security guards and burglars that comprise our listenership, you can sample delightful new music in a bewildering variety of genres and one or two old songs as well.

This week’s cavalcade of innocent  fun featured the new tunes from Asobi Seksu, Skream and Wet Hair along with four tracks from the new Topic Records box set.   Tracklist looks like this: Continue reading

Okkervil River - The Stand Ins

Okkervil River - The Stand Ins

Now then, I never got round to writing a proper live review of Okkervil River supported by Dawn Landes last Friday in Manchester.  I would have liked to though, because it was a marvellous gig, probably one of the most enjoyable I have attended this year.   I was surprised Okkervil River were playing such a small venue (Club Academy) as the only previous time I saw them was on the main stage at the ATP Festival in 2008.  But anyway, I did play tunes by both Okkervil River and Dawn Landes in last night’s show, which went like this…

The Dodos – Fables
Trashcan Sinatras – People
The Very Best Of – Zam’dziko
Bibio – Lover’s Carvings
George Pringle – LCD I love you but you’re bringing me down
Dawn Landes – Love
Okkervil River – Pop Lie
The Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows (mono)
HEALTH – Eat Flesh
Múm – Hullaballabalú
Simian Mobile Disco – Cream Dream
Girls – Lust For Life
APSE – 3.1
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – Song for Bob

Iron & Wine - Around The Well

Iron & Wine - Around The Well

Regular listeners will have, in recent weeks, heard me play wonderful covers by Iron And Wine of songs by New Order, Flaming Lips and The Postal Service, all from the new compilation Around The Well. Tonight I played one of the Iron And Wine originals from this 2CD set. It’s a mighty fine collection indeed. Also tonight’s show featured 4 tunes that could well be vying for inclusion in the ‘ best of the year’ list when it comes to thinking about such things – new releases by HEALTH, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, APSE and The Very Best Of are all jolly spiffing. By the way, I think I’m reflecting the bands’ own personal preferences there by using all capitals for some of them, but I could be wrong.

The full list of tunes played tonight is thus

Wildbirds & Peacedrums – My Heart (Deerhoof remix)
The Very Best Of – Warm Heart Of Africa
Bibio – Palm Of Your Wave
Joker’s Daughter – Lucid
Slow Club – Trophy Room
Metronomy – Do The Right Thing
APSE – 3.1
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – The Rider Song
Little Dragon – Feather
Iron & Wine – Sacred Vision
Grizzly Bear – While you wait for the others
Boards Of Canada – Amo Bishop Roden (Warp20 (Chosen) compilation)
HEALTH – Die Slow
Dark Captain Light Captain – Questions (Hatchback remix)

Selection Box

Good morning, Patrick Thornton from the Selection Box programme checking in.

Well, how very exciting – another place to babble incoherently. As if an hour’s worth of airtime every week to waffle on in between records wasn’t enough to satisfy my personal vanity.

For those of you lucky enough not to have caught my show, I am a high profile and well-respected radio disc jockey with up to 3 listeners. Wow, imagine that.

There’s no enormously intellectual agenda to Selection Box, the intention is simply to enjoy music of all genres. I’d like to think that everyone listening would like at leat one record played during the show, and whilst not seeking to be willfully obscure I’d hope that lots of what we play will be new to you.

You can also contribute to the content – particularly by sending suggestions for our long record feature Thanking Your Kind Indulgence. Here are the rules:

1. The track must last 7 minutes or more.
2. It must be good.
3. That’s it.

Eclectic Mainline – 26th August 2009

Well now, this is the first time I’ve posted my playlist here, it’s always previously just been on Myspace. Basically, the show goes out on a Wednesday night, 8pm (UK time) before Laura Rawlings’ BCB Sessions starts at 9pm. It’s just a load of new music basically, with some semi coherent rambling by me in between songs. Last night the in between bits were enhanced by the presence of Phil Cope in the studio too, he’s usually on at midnight as Wednesday morphs into Thursday. Anyway, here’s what I played last night:

Arctic Monkeys – Pretty Visitors
Vowels – Two Wires
LFO – LFO – (Warp20 (Chosen) compilation)
Iron & Wine – Waitin’ For A Superman
Fuck Buttons – Surf Solar
Martin Heslop – As The Stories Burn
DiskJokke – Rosenrød
Flaming Lips with Stardeath & White Dwarfs – Borderline
Get Back Guinozzi – Low files tropical
Yatch – The Afterlife
unknown artist – hidden track from Edges compilation
Lou Barlow – The Right
Soulsavers – Death Bells (Mogwai remix)

Of the above, without a doubt the standout tune for me is diskJokke‘s new single. It’s quite fantastic, and may well find itself in my end of year list.
