Eclectic Mainline 3rd March 2010

So, tonight we launched our revised schedule by having a Beach House interview split between my show and Too Much Too Young, and also a Lawrence Arabia session in Laura’s.

Beach House have commissioned videos for every song on the new album Teen Dream, as you may have heard in tonight’s interview. The above video, for Silver Soul was actually directed by Victoria Legrand herself.

Here’s what I played in the show:

Dizzy Comes Back To Bradford

This week’s programme is another super special Crossroads programme. I recently contacted that great piano player, Diz Watson of Diz and the Doormen fame to a) let him know that his LP BLUECOAT MAN, continues to thrill 27 years after it was made, and b) to ask if he had any new music – and guess what – he has. TONKY HONK, a CD on the Ace label.

I suggested that Diz may like to come into the studio and chat, play some of his music and play some records by people he liked. To my amazement not only did I get a reply, but it arrived on a postcard from Ilkley. Diz was visiting his sister, who lives there and he came into the studio to record the programme – joy of joys. During the interview it transpired that he lived in Bradford as a lad although he was born in South Africa. His music is a “potent gumbo of Barrelhouse, Rhythm and Blues, Rock and Roll and Boogie Woogie”, although if you ask me that doesn’t quite cover it. It’s full of energy and displays a musicianship that is outstanding. He makes it sound so easy but he claims he is still learning – it takes 50 years to be really good at the piano. he said. It is clear he loves this music and this infectious enthusiasm shines through all his stories.

Podcast Special – Selection Box v Speech Debelle

Yon editor seems to have got all a-giddy and presented this as some kind of huge new exciting podcast brew ha ha type behaviour. It seems a bit over excited, considering that I announced that this interview would appear on these pages a few weeks ago, but if someone wants to trump for my corner, who I am to complain? So long as it doesn’t smell.

Speaking of corners, it also seems that young Adam – for he is the aforementioned editor in question – has titled this interview as either some sort of pugilist pagga betwixt myself and my subject. Either that or that we’re indulging in one of those terpsichorean mash-ups, which is not the case either. It’s just two people having a chinwag, one of them (me) duty-bound to be far nosier than the other.

So, here’s the obligatory photo for visual stimulus, and then you can listen to the interview, by jiminy.

Neil Hannon interview (I don’t like cricket, I love it)

Arhh haha, It’s not really Patrick here at all, it’s Adam. But I am posting on behaf of the blue haired chap from the picture on the left (he has gone to France). I am posting up his interview with Neil Hannon best know for The Divine Comedy (and My Lovely Horse). The interview was broardcast on Patrick’s Monday night show, where he spoke mainly on the subject of ‘The Duckworth Lewis Method.  If you have not heard the album you can listen to the whole thing on spotify here (I just listened to the whole thing 3 times over; it’s very good on the ears).  Anyhow enough of this written primative word;  click play to hear the interview…
