Matters relating to Albert Freeman’s Eclectic Mainline show.

Eclectic Mainline 28th July 2010

I had an operation today, but no you don’t now have to call me Alberta.  It was only a minor operation.  That said, I will never be able to listen to Windstorm by School Of Seven Bells the same way again.  That was the tune in my head when I went into theatre, and I tried oh so very hard to just focus on singing that song over and over in my head, rather than thinking about what the surgeon was doing….“focus on the song, Albert, focus on the song!!!” I told myself.

Remind me to tell you Phil Cope’s joke about the snail in the pub some time.

This is what I played tonight:

These New Puritans – ‘Hologram’ (Albert Freeman remix)

Back in June I told you about a remix competition for These New PuritansHologram.  I suggested I might have a go myself, and indeed I did!  I would be the first to admit that mine is not a fully realised idea.  Given more time (to get more familiar with Logic, as well as exploring my idea for the remix) I think my mix has potential to sound much better.  Another thing to note (and again this is to do with me not being too familiar with Logic yet) is that mine is relatively quiet – so turn up the volume when you listen to mine!

Anyway, I entered my effort into the competition.  You can hear it below along with the original and also my favourite of the other competition entries, that by Mute Branches.

Eclectic Mainline 21st July 2010

Well, last week you might have heard Phil Cope play a tune by the simply marvellously-named Duran Duran Duran in his show. By some strange twist of fate, this week I’ve userped Mr Cope by playing a tune with the lyric “Duran Duran Duran Duran” in it (it was the new single by The Vaselines in case you missed it). Anyone would think it was all part of a grand plan, but I assure you listeners, Laura is not, as far as I know, preparing 5 Durans for her show next week.

Here’s the next in the installments of Grinderman teasers. I showed you the first last week.

And here’s a list of what I played in tonight’s show:

The Duke And The King session

If you didn’t hear The Duke And The King in session back in May, you missed a really good one. This was certainly one of Laura’s favourites so far this year in her show The BCB Sessions. Laura asked me to help out with the session, and it was a real pleasure.  So, here’s another chance for you to hear it.

A bit of simple GCSE level physics, but explained in a rather roundabout way:

If a ball travels approximately horizontally towards a static object (lets say a horizontal bar) and hits the underside of said object, this will cause the ball to have backspin as it falls sharply downwards.  Then, if as the ball comes down it comes into contact with a flat horizontal surface soon afterwards (the ground, say) the backspin will make it bounce backwards a bit in the direction of the horizontal plane from which it came.  So, if it hits our static object (the bar) again upon bouncing up, and if we imagine there was a straight line (let’s say it’s white) on the floor immediately below our static object (the bar), it must have hit the ground beyond that line.  If it hadn’t landed beyond the line, it would have missed the bar on the way back up.

The one man who DEFINITELY knew

"maybe nobody will notice, after all the're aren't many cameras around" - Manuel Neuer

Basically, what I’m saying is, the ref and his assistant could have figured out the ball had crossed the line simply from the fact that it hit the bar again as it bounced up.  “Get over it” I hear you say.  Maybe one day…
