When Big Joan Sets Up 5/5/11 – The Greatest Record Ever Made?

BEAVERBAGFRONYCOVER

The Greatest Record Ever Made - although er.. it's not a record

“Brevity is the soul of  wit” said Uncle Bill’s Polonius  in “Hamlet”  his famous tale of  cigar manufacturing in the Kingdom of Denmark .

Little did he know it in 1602 but he was summing up the appeal of  “25 Great Rock N Roll Hits” by Beaverbag , an ensemble of whom I know nothing other than their name refers to a disgusting sexual act, apparently.

This download LP contains 25 cover versions of what people who own purple satin bomber jackets with “Elton Across America ’76″  emblazoned across the back  refer to as “Classic Rock”. These are rendered in bursts of betwwen 7 and 10 seconds in bowel shaking grunts with little regard to the orginals and by this token, massively improve upon them.

I mean , who really wants to devote 8 plus minutes of their lives to listening to Ray Manzarek’s interminable tinking on The Doors’ “Riders On The Storm” when the ‘Bag (as I have elected to call them)  get the whole thing over in seconds thus leaving valuble time for more noble pursuits such as eating fig rolls , watching “Celebrity Juice” and scratching?

Another track from Sufis At The Cinema – this week’s it’s Lata Mangeshkar & Shamsahd Begum, with Teri Mehfil Mein Kismat Azmakar. Our friendly Bollywood expert Irna Qureshi – http://bollywoodinbritain.wordpress.com – says:

“This is an ace qawali from Mughal e Azam – www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC7LyI1GVYw – and the first time I’ve watched this song clip in colour actually. Not sure I like it better than the b&w that I’m used to seeing. When this film was made in 1960, it featured the top actors of the day and was the most expensive film ever made at that time. It was all made in b&w apart from a mujra dance performance which was in full technicolor.

I love the qawali above because it’s performed by women. They’re actually having a poetry competition. The prince has asked two teams to debate the sacrifices that love is worthy of, so the women are doing this to music. I love the way they hand back to each other with their hand gestures. And the uniformed chorus girls. Lovely.”

Selection Box Shows 173, 174 & 175

It's in Turnham Green, ACTUALLY.

I appear to have gone missing in action from here in recent weeks, which is slightly less preferable than going missing in Acton. I know of at least one really nice pub in Acton, so I could probably find that after a quick search and make my way to a Tube station from there. There are no decent pubs on the internet.

This is all a meaningless pre-amble into the dullardry of three playlists, with the shows available on BCB’s Listen Again feature.

I found out about Fairshare today (thanks, Sally).  It looks really good.  A social enterprise music download site, who give 50% of their profits to a charity of your choice.  I never need use iTunes again (actually, I’ve only ever bought one song on iTunes, but that should now be the only one).

Here’s a trailer for the new Tamikrest album:

And here’s a list of tonight’s tunes:
