If you choose to listen again to tonight’s show, this is what you maybe ought to try and visualise at after about 40 minutes:

Albert with Rise Kagona at Rough Beats

Me talking to Rise Kagona at the 2010 Rough Beats Festival

Ahead of this weekend’s Rough Beats Festival I broadcast part of an interview I did with Bhundu Boy Rise Kagona at last year’s festival. He’s a fascinating man.  We spoke for over an hour, and what you heard tonight is just a small part of that chat.  This year Rise is performing with as Rise Kagona and the Jit Jive Band.

Here’s a full list of tonight’s tunes. Continue reading

Crossroads Goes Normal – so that’s normal?

end of elephant

I Went to the Crossroads Blog 29th May 2011

Hi, my Sunday evening chums – a “normal” Crossroads this week with a collection of new, old and very old. A track from Robbie Robertson’s latest waxing – 5 years in the waiting, a 1948 big hit from fussy old Bull Moose Jackson, a couple of over-40’s big numbers – the magnificent Sheffield windmill, Joe Cocker’s big hit and the lovely Bell Bottom Blues from Eric Clapton. Two extra special tracks by Cherry Lee Mewis, who appears at the Keighley Blues Club on the 10th June, finishing off with the delightfully barmy, Crossroads’ favourite – Seafood Department Blues – “there’s something fishy going on”!

Joe Cocker – With a little help from my friends
Derek & the Dominos – Bell bottom blues
Cherry Lee Mewis – Western star
Drive By Truckers – Cartoon gold
Albert King -Crosscut saw
J J Cale – Nowhere to run
Bull Moose Jackson – I want a bow-legged woman
Richard Thompson – Why must I plead
Cat Stevens – Don’t be shy
Bruce Springsteen – Rendevous
Dave Alvin – Highway 61 revisited
Robbie Robertson – He don’t live here no more
Cherry Lee Mewis – Southbound train
Jeff Chaz – Seafood Department Blues

When Big Joan Sets Up 1st June – GSH RIP

."No One Can Do Everything, But Everyone Can Do Something"

Gil Scott-Heron was a man who could combine rage and eloquence, which is a rare feat. Despite his well documented weaknesses on his day he was possesed of a fierce intellect combined with a hatred of injustice.

No wonder they put him in prison.

Pampidoo – “Synthesizer Voice – Goth Trad Dub Mix” (12″) (Greensleeves Dubstep)

Eclectic Mainline 1st June 2011

You can tell how little preparation goes into the sequencing of my show, by the virtue of the fact that 3 of the last 5 tunes in tonight’s show were b-sides.

Here’s one of my favourite tunes from tonight’s show, not one of the 3 b-sides though…

I was deeply saddened at the passing of Gil Scott-Heron at the weekend.  I have to admit that until last year’s amazing I’m New Here album, I knew little of his work, apart from ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised‘, of course.  So, I’m in no position to speak at lenght about how important he was.  But, the little exposure I did have to his work certainly left me deeply moved.  Here’s the video to the tune I played in tonight’s show.  You may think “ach, it’s 5 minutes long…!” but if you can, please watch to the end. When Big Joan Sets Up 26th May – On-U Special

on-u-sound1In this week’s thrilling episode we paid tribute to Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound records, arguably the most consistently brilliant British record label of the last thirty years and the reason I had to get a weekend job in the roughest pub in Ponty when I was 17 so that I could afford to buy pretty much every single one of their releases that Crash records stocked.

Adrian, if you’re reading this I got a fruit machine thrown at me in 1988 for you – and it was worth it (although I may not be saying that if it’d hit me).

The tunes
Kill Baby Kill – “Hunting For The Dead” (EP – “Sometimes, They Come Back”) (Self Released)
Jeff Mills – “Transformation Complete” (LP – “The Power”) (Axis)
Gallhammer – “Aberration” (LP – “The End”) (Peaceville)
Loudon Wainright III – “Screaming Issue” (Box Set – “40 Odd Years”) (Shout Factory)
Pleasure and Origin – “Dub After Dub” (12″) (Philles Blunt)
Girls’ Names – “Seance On A Wet Afternoon” (LP – “Dead To Me”) (Tough Love)
Johnny Pluse – “Blind Tap Dancer” (LP – “Lasers, Lasers, We Need More Lasers”) (Bulabeats)

On-U-Sound Mix

Prince Far-I/Singers And Players – “Virgin”(10”) (On-U-Sounds)
African Headcharge and Professor Stretch – “Brother Of Reality” (LP – “Drums Of Defiance”) (On-U-Sound)
New Age Steppers – “Some Love” (v/a LP – “Pay It All Back Volume 1”) (On-U-Sound)
Mark Stewart And The Maffia – “Jerusalem” (12″)
Tackhead – “Ticking Timebomb” (LP – “Friendly As A Hand Grenade”) (On-U-Sound)
The Barmy Army – “Billy Bonds M.B.E.” (v/a LP – “Pay It All Back Volume 2”) (On-U-Sound)

Creem – “Good Riddance” (7″) (Katorga Works)
