When Big Joan Sets Up 28th March -Tiddley iddley ighty

A mix from EQ Why‘s “ChiTokyo” mix tape this week along with a too long speech from me about why playing things on the radio that have a degree of artistic validity doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to support everything said within them.

You don’t get this problem with Florrie Ford.

When Big Joan Sets Up 21st March – Vivians’ Valedictory

On the day that people who tie their jumpers round their necks and have share portfolios rejoiced that indolent, caterwauling Radio 2 uber-bore Kate Bush has remembered what her job is, Big Joan wiped a tear from it’s metaphorical eye and bade farewell to the mighty Vivian Girls with highlights of their final live performance recorded at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg, New York at the beginning of the month.

For those unaware the Vivs are (were) a three piece band who between 2008 and 2011 released three astonishing LP’s and seven equally astonishing 7″ singles that sounded like the Shangri La’s covering Nirvana’s “Bleach” whilst being force-fed Wonka Bars.

To leaven the emotional tension we also had a host of top tunes including three from that golden year 1916. Where were you?

NB: As nyctaper.com objected to the use of the Vivian Girls material I’ve taken it down. You can hear the full gig at their website.

A drone rock/black metal showdown tonight as we aired exactly one third of the superlative new collaboration between Sunn 0))) and Ulver “Terrestrials” and started the programme with a bunch of 11 year olds gleefully mauling the favourite song of call centre managers who wear rugby union tops on casual Friday and keep a spare squash racket in the boot.

That rock ‘n’roll, eh? That rock’n’roll, it just won’t go away.

When Big Joan Sets Up 7th Feb – A Pattern of Righteousness

Funny thing a guitar innit?.Basically, a lump of wood with a hole and six strings stretched across it and yet over the past 90 years or so it’s been the pivot around which popular music revolves. I could list a couple of thousand people here who have taken said lump of wood and it’s electrically enhanced cousin and harnessed it’s intricacies in a myriad of approaches ranging from scholarly application to blatant disregard into epiphanies of sound that have the power to thrill and horrify successive generations. And it continues to do so, indeed as you are reading this, somewhere across the face of the world, a spotty herbert is making a noise using one of these devices that will likely as not, make you bounce up and down with joy sometime in the future.

Anyway, all this rumination is here because this week’s When Big Joan Sets Up featured five live tracks recorded last December in New York by Daniel Bachman the latest in a line of unassuming six string sorcerers to pick up the same instrument as our fathers and our fathers’ fathers (and our fathers’ fathers’ fathers.Yes alright Reg, don’t labour the point) and wrestle joyful flurries of magic out of it. He spends fucking ages tuning it up though.

Embrace are back

It’s been a long wait but the Embrace boys are finally back.
