Eclectic Mainline 21st November 2012

Do our brains act like virtual jukeboxes, storing a copy of every song we have ever enjoyed, and calling up any given song when prompted to do so by an outside stimulus? I ask this because every once in a while a song will end up going round in my head simply because somebody has said something that brings to mind its lyrics, or a conversation reminds me of a specific event that my brain links to a given piece of music.

This happened to me last week. I was speaking to a good friend about some of our favourite music from 20 years ago.  The next day when I awoke, ‘Fishes Eyes‘ by New Fast Automatic Daffodils was in my head, and there it stayed for several hours.  Despite not having heard it for several years, my brain was giving a pretty faithful rendition, and it sounded very much like this:

How this happens, I would love to know.  If anybody wants to sponsor me to write a book on the topic, I would certainly take up the challenge.

Anyway, as a result I decided to play a bit of New FADS in tonight’s show.  I also played this excellent Four Tet and Burial collaboration, that I picked on on 12″ at Jumbo Records earlier this year:

Another tune I played tonight was this from the Snow Palms album:

If you have a desire to listen back to the full show, you will find it on the BCB Listen Again site.  These are the tunes I played: Continue reading

The new Efterklang album is a thing of carefully constructed beauty.  To get a glimpse of the lengths the band went to to get the right sounds they wanted, watch this:

There were a couple of tunes tonight that I had to cut short due to their length.  My heart told me to let them play out, but my head told me it would have been at the expense of other tunes getting a look in at all. But such is the wonder of the Internet, that you can hear one if the long-uns in full now.  This is by Fimber Bravo, the first steel pan player to feature in my show:

Fimber Bravo – Life After Doomsday (with Zongamin) by moshi moshi music

Alas I couldn’t find the Nick Edwards tune online, so you’ll have to take my word for how good the full 16 minutes of that one is.  I can, however, show you this delightful tune by Akira Kosemura, the title track from the It’s On Everything album which is being re-issued by Raster Noton:

If you wish to listen back to the full show, you’ll find it here.

Here is a full list of the tunes I played:

Yesterday I learnt that Halloween has its origins in a Pagan festival called Samhain.  It looks like a rather good festival, without all the nonsense that comes with modern Halloween.  Anyway, before I learnt this, I had already intended to play this Roky Erickson tune, what with my show falling on 31st October and all:

Also featured in this week’s show was the Mark Pritchard’s Harmonic 313 remix of his collaboration with Wiley, “Money Man”:

Eclectic Mainline 24th October 2012

I had no show last week due to 11 local men trying to chase a leather ball past 11 non-locals, who were simultaneously trying to chase the same ball the other way. BCB decided this was an event worth commentating on.  Consequently, I have a backlog of tunes I want to play you.  I squeezed 15 in this week, including this gorgeous Nicholas Jaar remix of Cherokee by Cat Power:

I could quite happily have played one of the two 20-minute tracks from the new Godspeed You! Black Emperor album, but not wanting to leave too many other artists out of the show, settled for one of the shorter tunes.  I would highly recommend you listen to the entire album though, as it is quite brilliant:

If you have been listening to BCB and/or following this blog over the past year, you’ll know that we are quite keen on Those Darlins. Patrick banged on about their last album, as did Laura. Well, Those Darlins didn’t rest on their proverbial laurels, and have a new, seasonal single:

Another tune I played tonight is this one by JJ Doom:

If you wish to listen back to the whole show, seek and you will find.

Here’s tonight’s playlist: Continue reading

So, the new Flying Lotus album is out.  Jumbo Records sold out of the deluxe vinyl edition before I managed to get one.  I had mixed emotions as a result.  I was both disappointed (for me) but pleased (for FlyLo and Jumbo).  Clap along with this:

Shonen Knife are currently on a tour of the UK and Ireland.  Have a look at their live dates and see if there is still time for you to catch them.

Another tune from this week’s show with a video worth feasting your eyes on is that by The Helio Sequence:

If you want to listen back to the show, be my guest.  This is what I played: Continue reading

Andy O’Brien, who used to follow me at 9pm on BCB, would be delighted to learn of the return of Tilly And The Wall.  I started tonight’s show with their new single:

Eclectic Mainline 12th September 2012

After last week’s excitement, I have only the routine task of telling you how amazing the tunes in tonight’s show were. Why? are back, and this pleases me no end. I played the lead track from their new ‘Sod In The Seed’ EP tonight. Hear the whole EP though, as it’s mighty good:
WHY? – ‘Sod in the Seed’ EP by City Slang

I strongly advise you to seek out “Nothin But Time” from the new Cat Power album too. If you’ve been a Cat Power fan for as long as I have, you will remember when she played pretty much everything herself, and in those early days, that was often just her and a guitar, or her and a piano.  Well, although her sound as evolved greatly since those early albums, a similar principle applies; she plays the majority of the instruments herself.  She’s a modern day Stevie Wonder.

Here’s the full playlist from tonight’s show, which you can hear again over on this page.

Alt-J – “Something Good” (single and LP – “An Awesome Wave”) (Infectious)
Husky – “Tidal Wave” (single and LP – “Forever So”) (Sub Pop)
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – “Live It Up” (LP – “Mature Themes”) (4AD)
The Touré-Raichel Collective – “Alkataou” (LP – “The Tel Aviv Sessions”) (Cumbancha)
Dinosaur Jr. – “Pierce The Morning Rain” (LP – “I Bet On Sky”) (PIAS)
Rollo Jean – “St Tropez” (double A-side single with “Cellar Of Love”) (Memphis Industries)
Cat Power – “NothingBut Time” (LP – “Sun”) (Matador)
Rustie – “After Light feat. AlunaGeorge” (single) (Warp)
Call The Doctor – “Here To Haunt” (b-side to “Wrecking Ball” single) (Glasstone)
Why? – “Sod in the Seed” (EP – “Sod In The Seed”) (City Slang)
Sonic Boom Six – “Virus” (single) (Xtra Mile)
Frank Zappa – “Bobby Brown Goes Down” (LP re-issue – “Sheik Yerbouti”)
Babe, Terror – “Lifantastic I” (“Knights EP”) (Phantasy Sound)

Minor correction from last week’s show – I played the following but forgot to include it in my playlist:

Dinosaur Jr. – “Rude” (LP – “I Bet On Sky”) (PIAS)
