HEALTH

HEALTH

If I can make one recommendation for a gig next week, it would be to see HEALTH at the Brudenel Social Club in Leeds on Tuesday 6th October.  Die Slow is certainly one of my favourite tunes of 2009, and I’ve been led to believe they’re excellent live, so I shall be there on Tuesday as will Laura Rawlings.

Now, onto matters relating to tunes in last night’s show.  Of course, I played Die Slow, as well as covers of songs originally by John Denver (Micah P. Hinson) and The Beatles (The Feelies).  Here’s a full list of what I played:

Spiral Stairs – Stolen Pills
Anti-Pop Consortium – Capricorn One
Micah P Hinson – This Old Guitar
F*ck Buttons – Surf Solar
Cate Le Bon – Me Oh My
The Twilight Sad – The Room
The Feelies – Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey
HEALTH – Die Slow
Richard Hawley – As the dawn breaks
The Kindness – Swinging Party
APSE – Closure
The Death Set – Paranoia (Strike! compilation)
Hudson Mohawke – Fruit Touch
Lou Barlow – Goodnight Unknown
Choir Of Young Believers – Why must it always be this way

[addition at 17:30 on 1st October:  I have to admit, I didn’t learn until today the sad news that Beau Velasco of The Death Set died a few days ago, and it wasn’t for that reason that I played a song by them in my show]

Kevin Cummins photo exhibition at Salts Mill

There is an interesting exhibition of Kevin Cummins‘ music photography coming to Salts Mill this week .  Kevin Cummins, in case you are not familar with him, has taken numerous iconic pictures of bands for such publications as NME, The Times and The Guardian.  This exhibition documents the Manchester music scene from 1976 to the present day.  I’m certainly planning to go along to Salts Mill to see this myself as it sounds like a great thing to be coming to Bradford District.  Bands whose photos can be seen include Joy Division, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses and Oasis.

E Day 2009

E Day 2009

Last Wednesday’s show was punctuated by me giving snippets of information about E-Day which takes place on 6th October.  Last year E-Day fell on a Wednesday so I gave you numerous bits of energy saving advice, stopping short of suggesting you actually turn the radio off.  This year the main focus of E-Day is a social experiment on the Isles Of Scilly.  There is lots of info about it on the E-Day website, including real-time energy meters for a school on the isles, the islands themselves, and even the whole country.

The songs I played this week, which I’m afraid had no direct linkage to E-Day, were:

J. Tilman – Crosswinds
The Heavy – Short Change Heroe
Lou Barlow – The Right
Juliana Hatfield – We’re Not In Charleston Anymore (from Ciao My Shining Star – the songs of Mark Mulcahy)
A Place To Bury Strangers – Exploding Head
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – Zanstra
Micah P Hinson – You Didn’t have to be so nice
Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks
Autechre – EP7/Envane (Bogdan Raczynski remix)
Tender Trap – Fireworks
BLK JKS – Lakeside
Stardeath And White Dwarfs – Those who are from the sun return to the sun
The Twilight Sad – Seven Years Of Letters
Girls – Laura

Warp20 (Sheffield)

[Before I begin, please note, I’m no expert on Park Hill Flats and until this week I knew nothing about them, so forgive me if you know more than I do and I have got any facts wrong.  I think the following is fairly accurate though…]

Park Hill Flats, Sheffield

Park Hill Flats, Sheffield

Park Hill Flats were built in the late 1950s to re-house entire streets of people from one of Sheffield’s poorest slums into “streets in the sky”.  The scheme attracted a lot of attention, both nationally and internationally and was considered a pioneering project. However, within 15-years or so the level of poverty had not improved, and the high concentration of people meant that the level of crime and overall living conditions were if anything worse than the days when the slums were at ground level.  Many of England’s (visually, at least) similar high rise residential blocks have since been pulled down, but those in the Park Hill area were given Grade II listed status in 1998.  Since then there has been a move to renovate the flats, but at present they are in a curious state.

Now in 2009, while some of the neighbouring blocks of flats have been gutted with a view to renovation, the bulk of Park Hill estate is mostly unpopulated, and boarded up, with just one wing still being occupied by tenants.  This wing, and three unpopulated wings, form a horseshoe with a grassy embankment sloping down into the curve.  This accidental amphitheatre was chosen by Warp Records for a cinematic event as part of the label’s 20th anniversary celebrations. F*ck Buttons - Surf Solar

F*ck Buttons - Surf Solar

There are some fantastic things coming out of the All Tomorrow’s Parties record label at the moment, what with great new releases by APSE and F*ck Buttons this month.  To be honest, this is not a rare treat, as ATP have consistently been releasing top notch music for a good few years.  And their releases tend to be worth owning physically too, because as with 4AD you can usually be sure of a nicely put together artifact.  The new F*ck Buttons single is coming out (5th October, I believe) on a nice 7″ picture disc.  And to top it all, this weekend I’ll be in Sheffield on Saturday for the Warp20 event at Park Hill Flats where among a selection of Warp Records videos, and the UK premiere of The Living Room, the new All Tomorrow’s Parties film will also be shown.

Anyway, below are the tunes I’ve played on BCB over the past few days, and it’s a bumper list.  As well as my usual show last night, on Sunday morning I was a guest on Ben Mussanzi’s Peace Music programme, and this morning I filled in for Mary Dowson on About Bradford, BCB’s morning magazine show. Okkervil River - The Stand Ins

Okkervil River - The Stand Ins

Now then, I never got round to writing a proper live review of Okkervil River supported by Dawn Landes last Friday in Manchester.  I would have liked to though, because it was a marvellous gig, probably one of the most enjoyable I have attended this year.   I was surprised Okkervil River were playing such a small venue (Club Academy) as the only previous time I saw them was on the main stage at the ATP Festival in 2008.  But anyway, I did play tunes by both Okkervil River and Dawn Landes in last night’s show, which went like this…

The Dodos – Fables
Trashcan Sinatras – People
The Very Best Of – Zam’dziko
Bibio – Lover’s Carvings
George Pringle – LCD I love you but you’re bringing me down
Dawn Landes – Love
Okkervil River – Pop Lie
The Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows (mono)
HEALTH – Eat Flesh
Múm – Hullaballabalú
Simian Mobile Disco – Cream Dream
Girls – Lust For Life
APSE – 3.1
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – Song for Bob

The Beatles – The Half-White Album

The Beatles - The White Album

Much is being written about The Beatles at the moment because of the long overdue CD remasters, so “hey“, thought I, “why not add some more writing about The Beatles to the Internet?!

A lot of the talk provoked by the new re-issues is about the mono vs stereo mixes.  That’s a fascinating aspect of sixties recordings about which I have learnt a lot over the past week but I won’t go into that here, as I still don’t think I know enough about this to talk confidently on the subject. What I will do though is give my opinion on the old question of “What if The White Album was not a double album, but just one record?“.

Iron & Wine - Around The Well

Iron & Wine - Around The Well

Regular listeners will have, in recent weeks, heard me play wonderful covers by Iron And Wine of songs by New Order, Flaming Lips and The Postal Service, all from the new compilation Around The Well. Tonight I played one of the Iron And Wine originals from this 2CD set. It’s a mighty fine collection indeed. Also tonight’s show featured 4 tunes that could well be vying for inclusion in the ‘ best of the year’ list when it comes to thinking about such things – new releases by HEALTH, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, APSE and The Very Best Of are all jolly spiffing. By the way, I think I’m reflecting the bands’ own personal preferences there by using all capitals for some of them, but I could be wrong.

The full list of tunes played tonight is thus

Wildbirds & Peacedrums – My Heart (Deerhoof remix)
The Very Best Of – Warm Heart Of Africa
Bibio – Palm Of Your Wave
Joker’s Daughter – Lucid
Slow Club – Trophy Room
Metronomy – Do The Right Thing
APSE – 3.1
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis – The Rider Song
Little Dragon – Feather
Iron & Wine – Sacred Vision
Grizzly Bear – While you wait for the others
Boards Of Canada – Amo Bishop Roden (Warp20 (Chosen) compilation)
HEALTH – Die Slow
Dark Captain Light Captain – Questions (Hatchback remix)

Boo hoo

Well, due to some thieving swine at the Leeds Festival, Adam Wells no longer has an iPhone from which to upload Audio Boos and other multimedia.  This is absolutely rotten, as Adam had worked so hard setting up this blog in time for the festival, and has gone to the festival full of enthusiasm for getting top quality content.  All this has been done as  a keen volunteer, so it absolutely stinks that his weekend has been tainted like this.

Eclectic Mainline – 26th August 2009

Well now, this is the first time I’ve posted my playlist here, it’s always previously just been on Myspace. Basically, the show goes out on a Wednesday night, 8pm (UK time) before Laura Rawlings’ BCB Sessions starts at 9pm. It’s just a load of new music basically, with some semi coherent rambling by me in between songs. Last night the in between bits were enhanced by the presence of Phil Cope in the studio too, he’s usually on at midnight as Wednesday morphs into Thursday. Anyway, here’s what I played last night:

Arctic Monkeys – Pretty Visitors
Vowels – Two Wires
LFO – LFO – (Warp20 (Chosen) compilation)
Iron & Wine – Waitin’ For A Superman
Fuck Buttons – Surf Solar
Martin Heslop – As The Stories Burn
DiskJokke – Rosenrød
Flaming Lips with Stardeath & White Dwarfs – Borderline
Get Back Guinozzi – Low files tropical
Yatch – The Afterlife
unknown artist – hidden track from Edges compilation
Lou Barlow – The Right
Soulsavers – Death Bells (Mogwai remix)

Of the above, without a doubt the standout tune for me is diskJokke‘s new single. It’s quite fantastic, and may well find itself in my end of year list.
