Eclectic Mainline 8th June 2011

If you choose to listen again to tonight’s show, this is what you maybe ought to try and visualise at after about 40 minutes:

Albert with Rise Kagona at Rough Beats

Me talking to Rise Kagona at the 2010 Rough Beats Festival

Ahead of this weekend’s Rough Beats Festival I broadcast part of an interview I did with Bhundu Boy Rise Kagona at last year’s festival. He’s a fascinating man.  We spoke for over an hour, and what you heard tonight is just a small part of that chat.  This year Rise is performing with as Rise Kagona and the Jit Jive Band.

Here’s a full list of tonight’s tunes. Continue reading

Eclectic Mainline 1st June 2011

You can tell how little preparation goes into the sequencing of my show, by the virtue of the fact that 3 of the last 5 tunes in tonight’s show were b-sides.

Here’s one of my favourite tunes from tonight’s show, not one of the 3 b-sides though…

I was deeply saddened at the passing of Gil Scott-Heron at the weekend.  I have to admit that until last year’s amazing I’m New Here album, I knew little of his work, apart from ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised‘, of course.  So, I’m in no position to speak at lenght about how important he was.  But, the little exposure I did have to his work certainly left me deeply moved.  Here’s the video to the tune I played in tonight’s show.  You may think “ach, it’s 5 minutes long…!” but if you can, please watch to the end. Eclectic Mainline – 18th May 2011

Here’s the exquisitely sad video to the brilliant Low tune I played tonight, taken from their marvellous new album, C’mon.

Before my list of tonight’s tunes, an adendum.  I seem to have neglected to mention in my playlist of 2 weeks ago that I played something by Mark McGuire.  Do I go back and edit said playlist or mention it today?  I’ll do the latter.  I played “Slipstreams” by him 2 weeks ago, and another tune from the same album tonight.  Here’s the *full* list of tonight’s tunes: Continue reading

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds reissues: Let Love In / Murder Ballads / The Boatman’s Call / No More Shall We Part

Following the reissue of the first four Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds albums in 2009, and the next three in 2010 (about which I wrote on 4/4/10) the next phase of re-issues are now upon us.  This week Let Love In, Murder Ballads, The Boatman’s Call and  No More Shall We Part get the re-issue treatment.  As with the previous albums, you get a remastered CD plus a DVD containing the album in 5.1, extra tracks, videos, and and an episode of the Do You Love Me? series of documentaries about each album.  These interviews are fascinating, comprising of opinions from band members, associates, friends, fans, journalists, and even in the instance of The Boatman’s Call, a school teacher who taught Lime Tree Arbour to her class.

One of the highlights of each episode of the interviews is hearing Blixa Bargeld recall his experiences of the writing and recording process.  Hearing him describe the noise gate they used during the making of Let Love In is certainly worth buying that album just for that.  It is also, from my own personal perspective, wonderful to hear Sophia Burn wax lyrical about how great a bassist Martyn P Casey is.  He’s certainly one of the biggest influences on my own bass playing.

One thing I didn’t know was that apparently all the band members did actually undergo hypnosis, with varying degrees of success, during the making of the video to Loverman.

During the interviews on the Murder Ballads DVD, I learnt that there are 64 deaths during the course of the album.  Continue reading

Eclectic Mainline – 11th May 2011

Every so often (actually, quite often) some music comes along that I think is amazing.  Every so often (literally) I see some album artwork that I think is amazing.  Enter M. Ostermeier, whose new album combines beautiful music with a quite captivating, ‘is that real?’ cover photo.  It is real, and to find out where it is from, simply clickety click on the photo below.

You would be forgiven for missing the first half of tonight’s show and watching Waterloo Road instead because I, as one fifth of Wilful Missing, had music featured in today’s episode.  A very proud day indeed.  If you did miss any of my show you can listen again for up to 28 days.  Here’s a full list of what I played (several long tunes tonight, hence a smaller number of tunes in total): Continue reading

Eclectic Mainline 27th April 2011

I found out about Fairshare today (thanks, Sally).  It looks really good.  A social enterprise music download site, who give 50% of their profits to a charity of your choice.  I never need use iTunes again (actually, I’ve only ever bought one song on iTunes, but that should now be the only one).

Here’s a trailer for the new Tamikrest album:

And here’s a list of tonight’s tunes:
